Purpose:

To build a movement of African leaders of integrity who are committed to transforming Africa into a Premier continent (a continent characterized by excellence) shaped by God-centered values

Objectives:

  • Develop deep spirituality among African leaders that is God-centered and relevant to the African context
  • Develop a moral vision for Africa based on deeply personalized spiritual values
  • Develop a framework for Africa’s development that is holistic; touching on every aspect of life
  • Develop a framework for freedom of religion in Africa that ensures a democratic environment characterized by peace and stability

AFREG I took place in Abuja, Nigeria from July 25-28, 2006 while AFREG II took place in LImuru, Kenya from August 18-21, 2009. There were nearly 500 leaders from 27 African countries represented at both AFREG I and AFREG II. The participants included President Olusegun Obasanjo, President Pierre Nkurunziza and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka. Other participants included government ministers, parliamentarians, judges, church leaders, traditional rulers and other community leaders.

Participants shared common concerns about the challenges that face the continent and agreed that transformation is necessary and possible to achieve through the power of God. Such change ought to be radical, beginning in the lives of individuals and is expressed in how these individuals become the salt and light in communities and nations. These participants took on the challenge of working towards a movement of African leaders of integrity who are committed to making a difference in Africa.

AFREG Action Plan

Example of AFREG Follow-Up

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has prepared and distributed to churches across the country Bible study materials entitled "The Nigeria Christian Creed on Governance Study Guide and Teacher’s Guide". This material is a statement of what Christians believe should be their role in government. The study provides an opportunity for church members to reflect on what government is, what the roles are of those in government and those being governed. Also included are principles on how to identify, select, support and hold accountable those who rule. This great initiative is a follow-up to AFREG. The Nigerian Christian Creed on Governance is serving as a model for the rest of Africa, and ultimately for other regions of the world. The plan is to customize this material for other African countries.

Various national AFREG task-force groups have been meeting in Burundi, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia.

AFREG DVD Documentary

A 30-minute documentary is being prepared that will seek to capture the spirit of AFREG and be used to help recruit others to be involved in the AFREG movement.

Compendium of AFREG Papers

The AFREG I Compendium is published as "Religion & Government in Africa: A Christian Response".

The AFREG II Compendium will be published in book form in 2010.
